Mr. Johnny Garza retired after a 40-year career with the United States Air Force. He spent his
first 20 years active-duty military as a crew chief on C-130 planes and then as a substance abuse
counselor. His second 20-year career was spent as a civil service employee at Goodfellow Air
Force Base. In 2006, Mr. Garza was promoted to a GS-13 position and became the Chief,
Training Support Flight for the 315th Training Squadron. He stayed in this position until 2008
when he was management reassigned to the 17 Training Group to be the Chief, Plans and
Programs Flight where he managed the Training Group’s $43.5M budget as well as all Training
Group contracts, facilities, workforce, equipment and computer systems. He retired in 2016 and
is a Board member of Meals for The Elderly where he volunteers to serve meals for 750 elderly
and handicapped citizens.
His awards include numerous Civilian of the Quarter awards and “Civilian of the Year” for 1998,
1999 and 2002. As soon as he was selected to be a supervisor in 2002, he refused to receive
awards and instead would honor his employees. He also received the Department of Defense’s
Substance Abuse “Counselor of the Year” in 1998 and the “Department of Defense Drug
Prevention Office of the Year” in 1998.
Johnny is happily married to the love of his life, Patricia. Together they have four amazing children!
